Sometimes when we listen to the Monkees, a certain song will come on and make us go "aww" because it conjures up some sort of memory. Everybody, we feel, has these sentimental attachments to certain songs. So at the end of this page, there's a form. Submit your favorite memories!
"Oklahoma Backroom Dancer"
Allison: I remember at, of all things, a church picnic back in the late '90s, early 00s, when I was with my friend Erin. We snuck away from the festivities and went and sat on a swing in the park and we were talking about the Monkees. I must have been obsessed with this song at this point, because she said she didn't know it so I proceeded to belt out the whole thing. I was so awesome when I was young. Haha. I remember thinking I sounded really good too, but I highly doubt it. I also remember around that same time, I choreographed an entire dance to that thing in my dining room. LOLZ. I love young me.
"I'll Be Back Upon My Feet"
Allison: My cousin showed up at my house when I was in my early teens and had his radio blasting with his huge subwoofers totally pulsing. He said something like "oh, the MONKEES don't have any songs that bounce like that" and I was like "yeah, they do jackass." And he looked at me like I had three heads and went "okay, what song?" and I couldn't even tell him that I'll Be Back Upon My Feet had kind of a heavy backbeat (I was thinking of the intro) because I thought the title was lame. Haha.
"I Can't Get Her Off of My Mind"
Allison: My aforementioned friend Erin was OBSESSED with this song and hearing it always reminds me of a Monkees fanfic we wrote entitled Love to Love back in the day. There was a part in there about how Davy wrote it for her character and he performed it live. It was a pretty awesome fanfic. HAHAHA.
"Star Collector"
Allison: After the summer of 1997, I hadn't seen any Monkees episodes until December 2008, with the exception of the four that were included on the "Our Favorite Episodes" VHS, which I would watch and watch and watch. I was primarily a fan of the music (because that was all I had) so those episodes were all I had to cling to to see the Monkees in action (oh, the days before YouTube). Anyway, this song always reminds me of late night sleepovers with Erin where we would watch the four, and this was at the end of "Hitting the High Seas" so we'd always have to watch it and sing along. Haha. I love this song.
